Moments & Money Roll-in from Sac AIDS Walk Rummage Sale
By Joyce Mitchell(Sacramento) – Treasures roll out of a moving van in the parking lot behind Badlands and The Depot in midtown Sacramento Saturday, August 2, 2011 at 7 AM for a big rummage sale to jump start fundraising for two small benefitting agencies participating in the Sacramento Valley AIDS Run/Walk. “It was an impressive showing to see the number of people there to help set up and tear down,” said Greg Palmer who donated a huge van and storage space through Sierra Valley Moving and Storage Inc.
The rummage sale was put on by Capital City AIDS Fund (CCAF) to help Oak Park Outreach and Harm Reduction Services generate funds for the Sacramento Valley AIDS Run/Walk (SVARW). The event is slated for September 18th at 8:30 AM near the West Steps of the State Capitol.
“This year’s run/walk is going to be a block party and more fun than ever,” said CCAF Board Member Mark Mirowski who coordinated the sale. “CCAF wants to encourage smaller organizations to get involved and raise more money. This is a step in that direction”
Besides donated shirts, lamps, and books, there were numerous surprises. An old Oakland Tribune newspaper dated August 6, 1945 with a four-inch headline that read GIANT ATOMIC BOMB HITS JAPAN, TRUMAN REVEALS sold for $1. Another dated August 15, 1945 splashed a half-page newspaper headline in all caps that said PEACE. It also sold for $1. A full-length, mint-condition vintage mink coat went for $25, purchased by a high school theatre teacher for her students to use in performances.
An older woman on a fixed income fell in love with an oak table she said that she just couldn’t afford. Priced at $45, all she had was $25. A sold tag went on the table and as tears filled her eyes, she phoned her son to come collect her new treasure.
A 20-something young man paid $30 for a beautiful Peridot ring for his mother who was celebrating a birthday this month. Peridot is his mom’s birthstone and he left with an ear-to-ear smile, generously handing out hugs as he joyously sauntered out of the parking lot.
In all, the rummage sale raised spirits, awareness and $1,500 in cash. “Considering it was pulled together rather quickly, that’s a considerable amount of money to bring-in,” said Palmer. “Hopefully, it will help save lives.”
